You got into your profession because you wanted to help people.

After you finished grad school and got your first job, you began to experience some frustration about how much time is spent doing non-clinical tasks and how little control you have over the the things that could make a big difference for the people you work with.

Rather than spending time truly helping people, you're going to IEP meetings, drowning in documentation and either under or over-treating clients with little clinical flexibility or control.

Also, you're exhausted.

You thought this career was supposed to have flexible hours and solid salary but you're putting in extra hours at night and on the weekends and aren't being rewarded for it.
Your work / life balance is terrible and although you still love your profession, you're beginning to dislike your job.

Imagine if there was a way to work with only your favorite patient population, during hours that worked for you and your family and you were financially rewarded for your value and expertise.

That would be great, right?

It turns out, there is a program to teach you how to start your own private practice by treating private clients "on the side"...
Picture

Check all that apply:

  • You're looking for a step-by-step plan to follow to start your own private practice
  • You're interested in having a more flexible schedule (to accommodate your family or your own needs)
  • You don't want bosses or managers to be in control of what you can do clinically - you know what is best for your clients / patients / students and you want to provide excellent therapy without limitations
  • You're interested in having more control over your own income (instead of eagerly waiting for small raises that never seem to come quick enough - or at all)
  • You're worried about making a mistake / want to make sure you have the information to get your ducks in a row before starting
  • You want to start a private practice / start treating private clients but you have no idea where to begin
If you answered YES to any or all of the above, I've got great news for you. You can finally help more people while making more money by starting your own private practice either full-time or "on the side."

With a client in 2008; Great motto!
My name is Jena H. Casbon, MS CCC-SLP and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist, private practice owner / consultant, wife and mother.

Back in 2006 when I first became interested in treating private clients, I had no idea where to start. I was lucky to have two fantastic mentors help me save time by showing me the ropes.

After a few years of successes and several mistakes under my belt, I decided to take my experiences combined with their advice and turn it into a resource to help my fellow clinicians start their journey to private practice.

Now, nearly ten years later, I've helped over a thousand SLPs, OTs and PTs start their own private practices.

I am so lucky - I get to help clients, families AND my fellow clinicians.

If you're interested in following a proven path to private practice success, I have a resource that you might be interested in  :-)

A "Virtual Tour" of The Guide to Private Patients (Look Inside!)

1. Professional Liability Insurance

Obtaining professional liability insurance is the very first step to treating private clients. Mistakes and accidents happen. Make sure you're fully covered in the (very unlikely) case of a lawsuit.

I'll share my personal recommendations of liability insurers to make sure
you're fully covered.

2. Documentation 101

You absolutely need to document your services. It doesn't need to be as overwhelming or time-consuming as you may think.

I'll make sure you know exactly what needs to be documented, how to document your services and even share my clinical documentation forms and templates.

3. How to Market Your Private Practice - Your First Client and Beyond

Learn simple ways to build your caseload with ideal patients through marketing your services to colleagues and the public.

I'll help you make sure you're maximizing a small budget through the most effective marketing techniques.

4. Business Skills and Mindset For Helping Professionals

You're a people person - not a business person. If you're going to start a private practice however, you need some basic business skills. It's important to learn the basic business skills to turn you into a confident small business owner.

I'll break down basic business concepts in terms that
make sense to clinicians.

5. Money Issues: How to Get Paid and Track Your Income

It's time to stop selling yourself short and start getting paid fairly for the valuable services you provide.

I'll make sure you know what to charge, how to collect your fees and how to track your income.

6. How to Become a Health Insurance Provider

Becoming a health insurance provider can be overwhelming. Becoming an insurance provider allows you to get the most out of your private practice.

I'll make sure you know how to decide whether or not to take insurance, how to choose between companies and which companies insurance are the most popular, so that you don't have to stress out about it.

7. Understanding Taxes and Tax Deductions

Sadly, you had to pay income taxes on earned income associated with your private practice.

I'll make sure you understand taxable income and more importantly, take tax deductions to
keep more money in your pocket.

8. Promote Yourself Online - For Free!

Your future clients are looking for you one place - online.

I'll make sure you know some tips and tricks to promote yourself online with NO marketing budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I haven't started treating private clients yet?
This book was created for you!

The Guide to Private Patients is ideal for people who are in the research and/or "getting started" phase of treating private clients.

It's also appropriate for people who have already started and want to make sure they didn't miss a step.
What if I only want to treat private clients "on the side?"
This book is perfect is the best way to start.

I started by treating private clients on the side and that is what I recommend to everyone getting starting.

Quitting your job to then start your private practice is incredibly risky. Start by treating a few clients "on the side" of your regular job.

NOW - if you want to have a large, bustling, brick and mortar private practice, that is a fantastic goal... for later. This book will help you start your journey to private practice.
Is The Guide to Private Patients good for people who already have a full-private practice?
No.

The Guide to Private Patients is best for beginners. If you already have a private practice and are looking to grow your practice, check out The Guide to Creating a Web Presence for Your Private Practice, which is available here:
http://www.independentclinician.com/creating-a-web-presence.html
Can I decide to get The Guide to Creating a Web Presence later?
Absolutely!

The Guide to Creating a Web Presence for Your Private Practice is available here, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:
http://www.independentclinician.com/creating-a-web-presence.html
Can I read the e-books on my iPad? Kindle?
Yes!

The ebooks are PDF documents, which can be read on any computer, Kindle or tablet.

I highly recommend opening the PDF document in the Kindle or iBooks app on iPads OR following these instructions:
http://www.wikihow.com/Add-a-PDF-to-a-Kindle
WHAT IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS BEFORE (OR AFTER) YOU PURCHASE?
Just shoot me (Jena) an email. I'll get back to you ASAP  -->  independentclinician @ gmail. com
Is The Guide applicable for starting a private practice for both pediatric and geriatric clients?
Absolutely!

I have helped thousands of SLPs, OTs and PTs start their own private practice with their chosen population, whether that's kids, adults or both!

On the fence? Here are 4 real concerns you may have:

1. Can’t afford it right now?

I know that you have a lot of financial responsibilities at the moment. It doesn't help that you probably haven't gotten a raise or a bonus lately (or ever!)

The Guide to Private Patients isn't cheap. With The Guide to Private Patients, you get the information you need to start your own private practice. That's valuable content!

For the price of just 1-2 private sessions, comes the opportunity for unlimited income.

If you've been asked if you treat private clients and had to say no, think of the thousands of dollars in lost income you've already missed out on.

I am not looking to cause financial hardship - but if treating private clients is something that you really want to do, if you agree that it is something that would help your family, your job satisfaction and your clients, stop using the excuse that you can't afford it. Trust that you will be shown a way.

2. Not sure if you're ready yet?

Start before you’re ready.

But Jena, I’m not ready!

Let me explain.

I bet you’ve been thinking about private practice for a while now. Maybe you’ve been asked by a parent or friend, “I really need to find a private therapist. Do you know one?"

or

“Do you treat private clients?"

And you’ve had to say no - because you don’t. You weren’t ready yet.

And now months or years have gone by - and probably you still don’t feel ready.

Instead of continuing to say, “I’ll do it next month - I just need to get all of my ducks in a row first!” take steps to line up those "ducks" so that you can stop feeling so overwhelmed - and stop procrastinating.

Because you could keep procrastinating for several more months or even years!

Each month that goes by - or each potential private client you say to, means:
  • lost income
  • lost confidence
  • lost clinical gains

At some point you have to stop worry about being ready and just get started.

Once you have access to the knowledge you need and actually start, you will see the path to private practice that is right for you.

Thinking about private practice will not result in having a private practice.

Once you start, all of the pieces will fall into place.

But you have to start in order to ever have the private practice of your dreams.

3. Not sure if you have enough time?

Not sure if I have time right now? "Not having the time" can mean one of two things:

You don't have time to treat private clients.

Or

Either you don't have time to go through this resource.

People who have an extra hour or two a week can work with 1-2 clients and generate thousands of extra dollars each year. If you only have time for 1-2 clients, you can focus on them - which frees up time you would otherwise have to spend on marketing, etc.

If you don't have time to go through this resource, then that's another issue. I know that you're overworked and overtired.

And it's not your fault.

I'm trying to help you get out of the spinning wheel and create a life where you have more time.

You can't buy more time, it's true. But you can buy information that when applied, can lead to significantly more time... And income.

Working even part-time in private practice can allow you to reduce your hours and significantly increase your income.

4. Feel like you can find the info elsewhere?

Absolutely, there is plenty of information out there. There are resources available through ASHA, AOTA, APTA.

There are blog posts and podcasts. There are Facebook groups.

There is information all over the place.

And that's the problem. Most clinicians I know are short on time (see question above).

You can absolutely figure out how to do this by figuring it on your own. I did! But guess what? It took years! If you're short on time, years is too long.

The Guide to Private Patients is 128 pages. It's complete but concise and clearly laid out into 8 chapters that go step-by-step through the entire process. There are checklists and to do items to keep you organized and moving forward.
